Skill level and materials for this easy crochet headband for girls

Worked in double crochet and braided together, the Peony Fields Headband is a fun and quick spring crochet project for girls. The pattern includes directions to crochet a headband for the following sizes:

  • 0-6 months
  • 6-12 months
  • 12-18 months
  • 2-4 toddler
  • Child
  • Teen
  • Women

I originally wrote this pattern six years ago, but have revisited it over and over again for myself and my three girls.

For this 2024 update, I’m crocheting a headband in shades of blue for my 8 year old and wanted to share how I make it!

Check out the free and easy crochet headband for girls pattern below to see how to crochet a spring headband. You can also purchase the printable ad-free version HERE.

I made a video tutorial below as well, for you to reference (especially when it comes to seaming, that can be easier to understand through video for some!).

What Yarn Should You Use to Follow This Free Cabin Sock Knitting Pattern?

I’ve crocheted this easy crochet headband for girls in lots of different yarns. Since they are all different fiber content and colors, I wanted to break down each yarn separately:

  1. I Love This Cotton is a worsted weight cotton yarn from Hobby’s Lobby. The colors I used are “White“, “Pink“, and “Rosy“. I really loved working in this yarn for the headband because it had nice flexibility and ease, which will be important when you get to the braiding section!
  2. Caron Simply Soft is super easy to find at most craft stores. I really liked the color choices, but ultimately chose shades of blue for my 8 year old daughter. I used “Soft Green“, “White“, and “Robin’s Egg“. This also didn’t feel too stiff and was super soft!
  3. Lion Brand Vannaā€™s Choice is a warmer option. It’s an acrylic yarn, but I found that it was a fuller worsted weight yarn and is a bit warmer. Definitely more of a March/April headband than May in the Midwest. I used ā€œGrey Marbleā€, ā€œWhiteā€, and Pinkā€. I’ve also made one in “Charcoal Grey”, “Grey Marble”, and “Fisherman”.
  4. Loops and Threads Impeccable is what I used to crochet my own headband. It’s been a really nice layer in early spring. I crocheted this headband with “Chocolate”, “Aran”, and “Soft Taupe”. I think this one is a bit warmer than the first two options, too.

Sizing in this Free Cabin Sock Knitting Pattern

When crocheting the Peony Fields Headband for 0-6 months or 6-12 months, each double crochet strip will only be one row wide. For all other sizes, you will crochet two rows. You can always add or decrease the number of rows if you want a wider or narrower headband!

The pattern is written for the following general ages/sizes: 0-6 months, 6-12 months, 12-18 months, 2-4 toddler, child, teen, and adult. These are general sizes as have fit my children and other crocheters at different ages, but of course nobody is built the same! You can add or decrease the starting chains to make it tighter. Also, when you braid the strips together, you can make the headband loose by braiding loosely. A tight braid will become a tighter headband.

The Free Braided Crochet Headband Pattern for Girls

This pattern is for a double crochet headband worked flat using a US I/9 crochet hook, braided, and seamed together.

Scroll down for the free pattern or you can purchase the ad-free printable HERE.

Materials:

  • US I/9mm crochet hook, or size to maintain gauge
  • Approximately 22 yards of worsted weight yarn x 3 colors (see “What Yarn Should You Use to Follow This Free Cabin Sock Knitting Pattern?” in this tutorial above).
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle to weave in ends

Size:

0-6m(6-12m, 12-18m, 2-4t, child, teen, adults)

Gauge:

Approximately 8 stitches in a 4″ double crochet swatch.

Pattern notes:

This pattern is for a double crochet headband worked flat using a US I/9 crochet hook, braided, and seamed together.

First, we’re going to double crochet three strips. Then, we’ll braid our headband so that all three colors match up seamlessly. Next, we’ll seam the cross sections of the headband on the back side. And finally, we’ll seam the top and bottom of the headband together.

CHAIN

Ch 46(47, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56) in your first color. Remember that you can chain more or fewer to make the headband looser or tighter.

FIRST ROW

For this row, we’re going to double crochet into the third ch from the hook, and cont double crocheting once into the bottom of each ch across (the horizontal bump when you flip over the stitch). Please reference the video tutorial for help! *If you are crocheting the 0-6m or 6-12m sizes, you will end here. Cut your yarn, weave in your ends, and skip ahead to the ā€œBraiding” section. Ch 2, and turn your work.

SECOND ROW

For all other sizes 12m and up, you will cont onto the second row. Double crochet into each st across. Cut your yarn and weave in your ends. Rep ā€œChainā€, ā€œFirst Rowā€, and ā€œSecond Rowā€ steps for your second and third colors so that you have three same sized stripes in three different colors.

BRAIDING

Now we will line up the three crocheted strips to braid. Braid the strips together so that the color order on the top matches the color order on the bottom, but do not seam the headband yet.

Note: Keep the braid loose or it will become too tight and small to wear. Hold your hand flat on top of the braid as you braid so that the yarn stays flat and loose.

SEAMING

Using your yarn needle and the color that runs through the center of the braid from the start, sew through the back loop in all three strips closest to each other in each place they cross. Reference the video if you need a very good visual!

Tie a double knot and weave in ends. With headband right side up, seam the matching colors together and weave in all ends.

I hope that you love your new project and cozy headband!
