A Free Knitting Pattern: Hygge Home Knit Pillow Cover

Sharing is caring!

It’s a good day for a hygge pillow pattern!

Wait, that’s everyday really.

So, today I’m sharing a specific cable knit pillow cover pattern: a little woodsy beauty I like to call the Hygge Home Knit Pillow!

Hygge, if you don’t know, means the feeling of being content and cozy, and snuggling up with this soft tweedy squish-fest will make you feel both of those things!

The Hygge Home knit pillow is a super cozy project because it’s knit with super bulky yarn. First, it’s knit in the seed stitch and has an off-center cable panel. Second, it’s seamed up the sides with a fold-over top for buttons. So read on to make a Hygge Home Knit Pillow of your own below! You can also purchase the printable ad-free version HERE.

But where do all the pillows go?

Now, I love pillows and require quite a few for comfortable lounging, but it’s NOT me! In other words, we have a pillow thief.

The other a day I found eight pillows crammed in the girls’ play tent in their room and I realized, “I created a monster.” Two of them, in fact.

So, the point is, this is the first pillow pattern that I’m releasing, and I hope you’re just as excited as me!

But, it won’t be the last pillow around these parts! Because my children are savage and I realize I probably have to squirrel away a pillow stash of my own to keep them safe!

I’ll share my pillow stash with her, if she promises not to spit up all over them!

Also, the thing about this pillow is that I discovered the best pillow insert in the entire world, and it even shipped to my house for free! Happy sigh.

In fact, I had bought a couple pillows last year for our sunroom from Walmart (note to self: no more Walmart throw pillows). But even though the buffalo plaid and snow covered trees are cute, nobody warned me in my Christmas rose-colored glasses that they’d be useless for 80% of the year!

So for the entire spring and summer, I had snow covered pine tree pillows in my 90 degree farmhouse. In other words, my snowy pillows taunted me with their fake snow all summer long!

So, enter the beloved knit pillow cover.

Pillow covers are lifesavers, really. Because in our house, the baby spits up daily, two children are in the grand spilling phase, and I clearly can’t hide all the pillows from them. And so pillow covers it is! Having a fold-over top that can easily be whooshed off and cleaned makes life a little more hygge, no? In fact, I plan on knitting a few more to easily swap out to clean!

I’d definitely classify hygge as drama-free pillows you don’t have to wrestle off.

Side note: Have you ever tried teaching children how to put on a pillowcase? Because those are some dramatic pillow situations!

The Pattern

Yes, yes, it’s time to move away from pillows with bad attitudes and pour a cup. Let’s get started!

Description:

Hygge is the feeling of being content and cozy, and snuggling up with this soft tweedy squish-fest will make you feel both of those things! Bulky yarn and giant cables? Yes please! First, knit in the seed stitch with an off-center cable panel. Second, the Hygge Home Knit Pillow is seamed up the sides with a fold-over top for buttons. Because this is an intermediate level project it’s a great first cable knitting project for new knitters to take on. And it’s knit flat in a rectangle with one simple, wide cable panel. So stay cozy!

Materials:

  • US Size 15 (10 mm), 14″ straight knitting needles
  • Approximately 2.5 skeins of Lion Brand Hometown USA in Riverdale Tweed (81 yds/skein)
    • This project uses approximately 195 yds of yarn
  • Wooden buttons (THESE worked really well and add a rustic feel!)
  • 16″ x 16″ pillow insert (I’m a big fan of THIS ONE)
  • Cable needle
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle to weave in ends

Size:

Sized to fit 16″ x 16″ pillow insert

Gauge:

Approximately 7 sts x 13 rows in a 4″ seed stitch swatch

Pattern notes:

First, this pillow cover is knit back and forth in a rectangle with the seed stitch pattern and a wide, offset cable panel. Second, it’s seamed up the sides and folded over with large buttons in the back. And if you knit with a tighter gauge or use smaller needles, you’ll want to add button holes. But if you would like to adjust the pillow to fit a bigger or smaller insert, make sure you cast on additional or less stitches, keeping in mind that 7 sts= 4″. So to make the pillow longer, all you have to do is knit a few more rows in the stitch pattern.

CO 32 sts

First, I like to use the long tail cast on for a clean, braided edge.

Row 1 (RS): k1, p1) x 9, p1, k6, p1, (k1, p1) x 3

Row 2 (WS): (p1, k1) x 3, k1, p6, k1, (k1, p1) x 9

Rows 3-8: Rep rows 1 & 2

Now we’ll begin our first cable row.

Row 9 (RS): (k1, p1) x 9, p1, c6f, p1, (k1, p1) x 3

Continue 9 row rep until pillow measures 32″

Now we’re going to add a ribbing section for the fold over top. If you’re going to add buttonholes, this is where you’ll want to do it!

Row 1: *k1, p1* across all sts

Row 2: *p1, k1* across all sts

Rows 3-6: Rep rows 1 & 2

Bo in pattern

Line up the cabled sections (not including ribbing) with right sides out. Seam up both seed st sides.

Sew on 3 buttons to the co side, measuring to make sure you give enough room if you have large buttons.

Now you’re ready to stuff and fluff your hygge home knit pillow cover!

So just wiggle the insert in, button up, and lounge on your cozy new addition!
