We’ve all been there. The double pointed needle gets lost in the couch. Or worse? Between the car seats!
Today I’m walking you through how to organize knitting needles. This is a great seasonal knitting practice and a part of a spring clean your knitting series I’m doing on the blog, which you can read through here.

How to organize knitting needles
Straight needles
- Find a drawer. Any drawer, up high if you have young kids. Kick the junk out of the junk drawer if you have to.
- Match pairs and sets of knitting needles and keep them separate from each other. You can use compartments, either permanent ones by gluing wood together or with skinny Dollar Tree baskets.
- Label it! You think you’ll remember, but when it’s 10:00 at night, the lights are low, and you’re squinting to read what size that tiny US 1 DPN is in the lowlight, you won’t be a happy knitter. I label mine with washi tape right on the inside of the drawer, but you could also tape the washi tape or a tag on needles you bundle together with a rubber band.
Circular needles
If you have an interchangeable knitting needle kit, find all of the needles and cords and put them back. If one is busy in a project, put a little sticky note in its place telling you where those needles or cords are!
Any circulars that didn’t come in a kit can be put together in a clear zippered pouch. It’s my favorite way to organize knitting needles that have long cords.
Again, bundle them up with rubber band or washi tape and write down its size on a little tag. Bonus: this also helps keep the cords from getting tangled!
Tip: Always keep an extra DPN in your notions bag for cabling or holding stitches. I keep an extra US 3 and US 7 in my bag. You’ll want one that’s the same size or smaller than whatever project you’re working on so the stitches slip on and off easily and your project isn’t ruined. Know you’re using US 13 needles? Stick a single US 13 DPN in your notions bag until you bind off, then back in its place it goes!
