A Simple Baby Blanket Knitting Pattern For Beginners

When I was planning my daughter Lucy’s woodland nursery, I KNEW I needed a rich forest green knit blanket in there.
Besides being really stinking cute hanging on the crib, I wanted to knit a blanket perfect for tummy time with a subtle texture that would show up in all those newborn photos I’d be taking!
Textured with an Irish moss stitch and an easy ribbed border, this blanket is great for beginners and fun for any level knitter.
The pattern is far from boring, but with just two stitches (knits and purls) it’s easy to memorize and knit this baby blanket while watching TV. It’s such a classic pattern but pairs so well with the trendy woodland nursery theme.

What Yarn Should You Use to Follow This Baby Blanket Knitting Pattern for Beginners?
When I was deciding on the colors for this blanket, I had no idea if I was expecting a girl or a boy. This was our third baby but the first time we waited to be completely surprised! And it can be so hard to choose yarn color combinations for any project.
I ended up picking out this gorgeous We Are Knitters The Petite Wool in Forest Green, and I was actually surprised with how soft it was.
I knew I wanted wool because I wanted something that would really show off the texture and hold its shape.
Have you ever successfully spread out a hand knit cotton blanket without it looking like a wet misshapen Kleenex?! Soft wool was the answer, since I knew this was going to be a floor blanket for pictures and tummy time.

The only two stitches needed to make this blanket are knit and purl, isn’t that the best?! I love when I see something I want to make and know I’ll be able to memorize the repeats. So, so simple!
Knit Baby Blanket Sizing
When I set out to make this blanket, I knew I wanted to make just the right size for a baby 0-6 months. That’s prime time for newborn photos and tummy time videos, plus they’re not really crawling all over the place yet.
You could totally knit smaller dimensions to create a lovey, or add some rows and stitches for a throw.
Once Lucy outgrows laying on top of it, I’m excited to graduate this blanket to a cozy stroller blanket!

How to Knit a Quick Baby Blanket
The whole project took pretty quickly because of the bulky yarn and larger needles. This would be a great knitting project to sell at markets or gift to a friend.
If you’re not expecting but know someone who is, this would be a really special baby shower or baby’s first Christmas gift! It was really therapeutic to use knitting as a way to slow down and start to bond with our Lucy before she was even here! Read more about what to knit for babies here!
The Pattern

Materials:
- US Size 11 (8 mm), 24″ circular knitting needles
- <3 skeins of We Are Knitters The Petite Wool in Forest Green (3.5 oz/skein)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle to weave in ends
Size:
26″ x 28″
Gauge:
Approximately 12 sts and 16 rows in a 4″ stockinette swatch
Pattern notes:
This blanket is knit with knit and purl stitches, casting on and binding off. A quick online search can help you find help with any of these basics. You can watch my How to Knit video above to see how to cast on, knit, and bind off. I also wrote a post for beginners learning to knit! If you would like to adjust the pattern’s width, keep in mind that you’ll need to cast on a multiple of 2 (excluding the garter stitch edges for the border, 6 sts, on each side). To make the blanket longer, all you have to do is knit a few more rows following the stitch pattern.

Woodland Moss Baby Blanket Knitting Pattern for Beginners
CO 74 sts
This blanket has a garter stitch border, with 6 st on each side. Use stitch markers if needed!
Garter edge
Rows 1-6: K all sts
Irish moss st section. Knit the following rows from * to *.
*7: K 6 st, *k1, p1* to last 6 sts, k 6 sts
8: K 6 st, *k1, p1* to last 6 sts, k 6 sts
9: K 6 sts, *p1, k1* to last 6 sts, k 6 sts
10: K 6 sts, *p1, k1* to last 6 sts, k 6 sts*
Rep rows 7-10 for a total of 28″ from co edge
Final garter st edge
K all sts for a total of 5 rows
Bo and weave ends
That’s all folks!
It’s really as simple as that 4 row stitch repeat, which is super simple to memorize.
