How To Knit a Chunky Scarf with Two Strands of Yarn at Once
Pinspiration strikes again!
When I was first learning how to knit, it didn’t take long to come across the gorgeous, giant knit scarves seen on most autumn and winter style Pinterest boards. I knew I wanted to make my own instead of pay $45 to buy one at the store! But I also knew that with inexpensive yarn, I could get the thick look by holding two strands of yarn together.
Saving a little money this time of year is always jolly, plus I’m just stubborn enough to fuss over recreating my own handmade version instead of paying big bucks for a machine made one. And I’ll never say no to more time slowing down to knit!
The problem was finding the right yarn that was thick enough, didn’t pill like crazy, and wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg for one skein. So I decided to knit my scarf with two strands of yarn held together!

Can you knit with two strands of yarn at once?
If you’ve never done it or even heard of it, the idea of knitting with two strands of yarn can be really intimidating.
I’m here to tell you that, not only is it possible, it’s also incredibly easy and beginner-friendly to knit with two strands of yarn!
Enter the Cabin Sunrise knit scarf! This chunky knit pattern can be finished in a few hours. All you’re doing is garter stitch (knitting every row) the whole time and seaming the two ends together.
Layer on the cozy! Knit entirely in garter stitch and holding two strands of yarn together at once, this chunky knit infinity scarf is great for the cold weather months, and can be knit up so darn fast. It’s easy for beginners and fun for any level knitter.
This scarf is knit in garter stitch, meaning every row is knit. Two strands of yarn are held and knit together as one.

Making a chunky knit scarf for less than $20
I made this scarf for less than half the price of chunky knit scarves in stores, and you can, too!
I scooped up two skeins of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick in Barley. At full price they’re just under $10 each, but guess what? You can find it at Michael’s and Jo-Ann’s with a 20% or 40% off coupon, or straight from Amazon HERE!
The wool/acrylic blend keeps the scarf from being scratchy and super bulky was the way to go. Remember, we’re even doubling that up!

Get your favorite show or book all queued up, because this pattern only calls for one stitch- knit! It’s really rhythmic and easy to knit, but it’s a quick project so you really won’t be bored working just garter stitch.
Cabin Sunrise
The pattern calls for exactly two skeins of Thick and Quick. It’s just enough to knit an infinity scarf, but you could also make a few adjustments to make it perfect for your body and style.
If you want to make the scarf longer, you will continue working the pattern repeat until your desired length. To increase the width, you’ll cast on more (or less if you want to go skinnier) than what is listed in the pattern. Keep in mind though that going too wide will create more of a neck brace effect since it’s double stranded and thick. This one’s made to be warm!
And if you don’t want an infinity scarf, you just won’t seam the ends together. But you’ll want to reevaluate the length if you’re not looping it, because this pattern can be looped twice. You can also make this a scarf with tassels or pom poms on the ends!

This scarf is knit in garter stitch, meaning every row is knit. Two strands of yarn are held and knit together as one. A quick online search can help you find help with any of these basics. You can watch my How to Knit video above to see how to cast on, knit, and bind off. I also wrote a post for beginners learning to knit! If you would like to adjust the pattern’s width, just cast on the number of stitches extra you want, keeping in mind the gauge. But remember that too wide will make it really thick and you may not like the way it lays! You’ll also need another skein of yarn to accommodate the length. To make the scarf longer, all you have to do is knit a few more rows following the stitch pattern before seaming.
This is the chunky knit scarf of knitter’s and Pinner’s dreams, for half the cost! And wasn’t holding two strands together so much better than you imagined it would go?! It’s one of those things that seems hard until you try it once, and then you get hooked on double stranding ALL THE THINGS! Extra cozy.
