mid-summer knitting with one foot in summer, one in fall

mid-summer knitting.
I find myself here every year. It’s hot outside, and while I’m not dreaming up Icelandic wool sweaters just yet, I’m still closer to the wooly end of the fiber spectrum than linen and cotton. I’m knitting with one foot in summer, one in fall.
I partially blame social media. Photos and reels of Christmas in July, sparkly reds and piney greens are all over the place right now. There are reindeer and bows galore. And yet, I’m not quite there. My heart says warm and cozy is coming, but my head (my whole body, actually) feels the 90 degree air outside.
So this is where I’m at: coming down from a string of crocheting granny squares and knitting dishcloths, and turning the bend into trendy leg warmers and boot toppers for fall.
Did I forget about the Christmas stockings? No! But I did forget my tension and had to frog 5 rows, so I’m back where I was last year. Progress on those can be followed on this playlist.

What I’m wearing
Speaking of granny squares, I’m wearing the Sugar Cookie Headband by Premier Yarns.
I had some trouble with this free pattern, but I shared my modifications here. There were no project notes or forum discussions on Ravelry that I could consult. Basically, 5 squares was just right, and squaring off the ends and adding ties is great if you’re a minecraft creature. But for the rest of us, it needs decreases and a more natural end or there will be bulging. That’s the risk you take with a free pattern from Pinterest, but luckily it’s such a small and fast project that there was room to adjust it easily.
I crocheted with a variety of colors from Berroco Pima Soft and a US F hook. That’s going down a hook size than the pattern called for, but again, I needed this thing to fit and not just look nice in a photo!
For my first attempt at the daisy headband, I followed this tutorial. It was great for one square, and maybe I’ll perform surgery to take away a square and crochet decreases, because I love daisies and want to make it fit!
What I finished knitting
birch hollow socks
these simple dk weight socks were knit with Knit Picks Hawthorne DK in the color Cattail Kettle, which you can find here. I knit them on size US 3 9″ circular needles like these ones. This will walk you through the whole free knitting pattern here. They’re meant to be the DK version of the worsted weight Simple Cabin Socks pattern.
wheatfield edge boot toppers
Boot cuffs vs. boot toppers, I have no idea the difference. But these are my simple stockinette boot toppers, knit in the round with US 9 DPN’s. Although to be honest, next time I’ll track down some circulars if I can find them with a 9″ cord because I don’t love DPN’s! I knit with worsted weight Plymouth Galway yarn in a pretty color called Sand Heather. You can find the free pattern for Wheatfield Edge here, and the similar super bulky weight Aberdeen Boot Cuffs here.

What I’m knitting now
unnamed fall socks
I’m so excited about these socks! They started as a pattern submission swatch for Pom Pom Quarterly (spoiler alert, they didn’t get picked, wah wah) but I decided to keep going on them because I loved how they were turning out. However, once I tried them on I knew I need to do some big ole froggin’ because they were too tight. So there they sat for a year at least, awaiting surgery and inspiration. I’m using Mandi’s Makings hand dyed sock yarn from a few years ago, which you can’t buy anymore unfortunately. I’ll keep you posted on the final pattern release and any requests for testers.
unnamed christmas socks
Similarly, I have unnamed socks knit with West Yorkshire Spinners “Nutcracker” colorway. I am making them slightly slouchy on US 3 9″ needles and with a longer cuff to fold over. At least that’s the vision. I’ll also send updates on testing and final pattern dates on these, either on YouTube or via email, so sign up for A Cozy Note if you’re not already on it!
Cozy days daisy blanket
gosh, tattoo this name on my brain because I can’t ever remember it! This granny square blanket is by All About Ami (she makes a ton of other granny square daisy projects). I’m using a combo of Knit Picks Wool of the Andes worsted “Bare”, Plymouth Homestead “Blue Frost” and Berroco Vintage Chunky in “Banana”. I’m not halfway there yet, but if I can focus on it, it’ll go by quickly!
I hope these projects inspired your summer knitting or got you excited for fall ahead! Stay cozy!
Pin it for later:
