farmhouse knitting podcast season 5 episode 4

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

However you celebrate, this is a great week to pull out your kelly green and golden yarn from your stash! I felt inspired to take better knitting photos and set up this podcast episode with todays’s tweedy green yarn.

Today’s video is aesthetically inspired by this week’s holiday, but the topic I’m sharing is about a simple way to take better knitting photos.

Do you shop at Trader Joe’s? Did you know that they have phenomenal (and cheap!) products that can double as photo props?

I love the creativity of photographing your knitting projects, but I know not everyone feels the same way. But no matter the lengths you go to for a photo of your knits, for fun or to share publicly or for business, I fully believe in taking the time to take a better photo of your knitting.

A good knitting photo shows off delicate stitches and accurately portrays the color of the yarn.

You can read the full blog post here, or click into today’s video to hear more about my 5 simple photo props I always use from Trader Joe’s.

What I’m wearing

Today I’m wearing my Simple Cabin Socks.

These worsted weight cabin socks are open to testers who want to knit up a quick pair of socks!

Oh my goodness, this yarn was so much fun to knit!

It did want to twist while I was knitting it, but it wasn’t annoying. Really the feel of the wool and the pretty muted yellow had my heart the whole time.

The yarn is Jagger Spun’s worsted wool in this springy “Maize” color. It’s 100% wool and has great stitch definition even in simple stockinette, which is what the whole sock is knit in. A simple vanilla cabin sock! You can read more about these socks here and decide if you’d like to knit them!

What I’m knitting now

Today I’m knitting up a pair of Farmhouse Chicken Socks, which releases on Monday March 20th.

I’m working on them with Hue Loco’s Backyard Chicken Collection in the colorway “Porcelain Bantam”. The heel, toe, and cuff are knit in stash Yarn Bee Authentic Hand-Dyed.

You can see my original walk through this pattern on YouTube here, but I’ve worked them up to fit better since that!

These socks got a workout this weekend during my photoshoot for the take better knitting photos post!

I’m also knitting

There is progress on my Winter Honey Shawlette by Andrea Mowry! I’ve shared this beautiful Rowan cashmere tweed yarn in my 5 Fun Spring Yarns post, but today I’m sharing the start of my first shawl(ette).

The yarn store didn’t have enough of this Yorkshire colorway, I couldn’t find it anywhere else, and I wasn’t willing to give up the color. I’d rather knit up the shawlette size with my favorite color than settle for another and do the large size.

This tweedy yarn is 80% wool and 20% cashmere, and will be so comfy come next fall and winter. I’m being realistic in my timeline, here!

I planned to knit this one up in today’s video, but it requires a little more focus than me chatting about other projects! I’d get so lost in where I was knitting.

Using pillows to take better knitting photos

Today’s video was styled with the Hygge Home Pillow, which you can also find on Ravelry. The yarn is Lion Brand’s Hometown USA in Riverdale Tweed, and it’s on my 16″ x 16″ pillow insert.

I hope you enjoyed our time together catching up on all things knitting and chatting about how to take better knitting photos. Stay cozy!
