Easy and Free St. Patrick’s Day Boot Cuff Knitting Pattern
This free St. Patrick’s Day boot cuff knitting pattern is seamlessly knit in stretchy ribbing. It’s a great beginner project to knit in spring. Directions to make two additional crochet shamrock and clover appliques are included to be sewn on the front.

Every year for about four years, my boot cuff stock I knit up all year long would quickly be bought up from January to March as people got ready for St. Patrick parades and parties.
This was the height of tall riding boots being in style, and although shortie boots are back in, I don’t think tall boots are ever truly out. Classic english countryside style, right there! I always wear my boot cuffs with Hunter rain boots in the spring, and snow boots in the winter.
So whatever boots you’re wearing, the chunky knit Westport Boot Cuffs will look great with them this spring. Plus, it’s an incredibly easy and quick pattern to knit up.
I was pregnant when I began this process, so the time it takes to knit would look a bit different four homeschooled kids later, but I would start knitting at around 7:00 a.m. and knit alllll day until 5:00 p.m.
Obviously I stopped for lunch, a short run, and bathroom breaks, but it was a date with me, the couch, and watching the whole Gilmore Girls series for the first time. I was able to knit four pairs (8 legs worth!) of boot cuffs each day. So this will work up fast!

What Yarn Should You Use to Follow This Free St. Patrick’s Day Boot Cuff Knitting Pattern?
The bulky weight yarn I ended up choosing for this pattern is Loops and Threads Charisma that I picked up from Michael’s. I had trouble finding something that was a good cream color that made me think of a knit fisherman sweater, but this is it! Now, you can use either White or Off White, depending on the style you’re looking for. This is the yarn I used here.
You can knit with any bulky weight yarn, as long as the gauge matches. You find the gauge by knitting a 4″ x 4″ swatch and measuring how many stitches per inch you get, then multiplying by 4. Example: If you knit 2 stitches per inch, 2×4=8 and your gauge is 8 stitches= 4″ in stockinette stitch.

Sizing for this free St. Patrick’s Day Boot Cuff Knitting Pattern
These boot cuffs are written as one size fits most women. The boot cuffs are worked in a knit 2, purl 2 ribbing pattern, which is super stretchy when it needs to be.
I used to knit ribbing on just the top and bottom of the cuffs, but quickly realized you need ribbing the whole way to prevent slouch.
Everyone is obviously different! If you need to make your boot cuffs longer or shorter on the foot, you will add or decrease the number of rows you knit/purl before binding off. You can also increase the number of stitches cast on for a tighter or looser fit.
How to Knit Boot Cuffs for St. Patrick’s Day
These boot cuffs will knit up so quickly, you may want to make a pair for every season and in every color!

Materials:
- US 10.5 (6.5mm) double pointed needles (these are the exact ones I use)
- Approx. 60 yds of bulky weight yarn (Loops and Threads Charisma āWhiteā and āOff Whiteā)
- 8 yds Caron Simply Soft āDark Sageā
- Scissors
- Yarn needle to weave in ends
- Stitch marker
Size:
One size fits all
Gauge:
Boot cuffs: 10 sts/14 rows= 4″ in stockinette
Appliques: 8 chs=4″ in double crochet
Pattern notes:
This pattern is for knit bulky weight boot cuffs using double pointed needles. I chose to knit with bamboo double pointed needles. You can use another method you find most comfortable. I also used the long tail cast on, but you can use a different method if you choose!
You can knit with any bulky weight yarn, as long as the gauge matches. To make your boot cuffs taller or shorter, add or decrease the number of rows. The pattern is written for one size fits most women. If you need the boot cuff to fit tighter, cast on less stitches. If you need the boot cuff to fit looser, cast on more stitches. Start small and cast on one more or one less and then test it. Remember itās a super bulky yarn!
Remember that bulky yarn stitches are wide. If it looks small when itās finished, try it on and be surprised by its stretch!
You will knit two identical boot cuffs and then crochet either 2 shamrocks or 2 clovers to sew on.

Westport Boot Cuffs: A free St. Patrick’s Day boot cuff knitting pattern
CAST ON
CO 32 sts using the long-tail cast on. You can watch a tutorial on how to cast on here at the :31 mark.
Place a beginning of round marker here and join to knit in the round.
RIBBING
We’re going to knit a simple and stretchy ribbing.
Rows 1-18. *K2, p2* repeat around, stopping at the BOR marker.
BINDING OFF
You will now take your stitches off your needles. You can find the video tutorial of this here at the 8:03 mark.
Set up:
- Knit the first stitch
2. Knit the second stitch
3. Pass the first stitch over the second stitch and off the needle. One stitch remains.
4. Knit a second stitch onto the needle.
Rep 3-4 until one stitch remains. Cut your yarn, leaving a 3″ tail. Carefully take the last stitch off the needle and pull the tail through the loop. Pull tight and weave in your ends. You can watch the tutorial for this here.
SHAMROCK (make two)
With your crochet hook, make a slip knot and ch 4.
- TC in 1st st (will now be called center st)
2. DC in center st
3. TC in center st
4. *Ch 3 and sl st into center st
5. Ch 3, TC, DC, TC, sl st into center st*
This creates 1 petal.
Rep 4-5 to create 3 petals for shamrock or 4 petals for clover.
We will now add the stem to the shamrock.
Ch 4
- SC into the 1st ch from hook
2. Sl st in next 2 chs
3. Sl st in center st
Break yarn and weave ends
Using embroidery thread in the color matching your boot cuffs, sew appliquƩ on securelyl
